OSHA fines Smithfield Foods $13,494 for not protecting South Dakota workers from COVID-19

OSHA has fined Smithfield Foods the "maximum allowed by law" for a single violation of failing to protect its employees at its Sioux Falls meatpacking plant from COVID-19. That fine: $13,494. A COVID-19 outbreak at the plant in March and April sickened 1,294 employees and killed four, OSHA said. It also sickened hundreds of family members and other close contacts to workers.
